School Programs
One of the most important functions
of Clean Fairfax Council is to educate the students of Fairfax County
on issues relating to litter, graffiti, and the environment. The following
two programs provide a direct forum for the education of children in schools
on these issues.
Grade Level or Larger Groups:
An Inconvenient Truth™
-The documentary that offers a look at the issue of global warming. Borrow
a copy of the DVD to show at your school. Contact the Council to set up
a date. DVD format; 96 minutes.
The Rotten Truth About
Garbage - a broad based overview of the solid waste system including
litter prevention, recycling, and composting with specifics about what
is happening in Fairfax County. All Elementary Grades.
Down the Drain
- an overview of water pollution, contamination, and waste and what children
can do about it. It talks about the litter and recycling issues and how
water is effected. All elementary grades.
Wartville Wizard
- a story of a town which had a terrible litter problem and how they solved
it. The book is on slides and is read. For preschool through third grade.
Single Class, 4th through 7th Grade:
Environmental Jeapordy
- where the class is divided into teams, answers questions about the environment,
litter, and recycling. Win points and prizes. Single class.
High School Programs:
Graffiti Information
- a video with Malcolm Jamal Warner who talks about the graffiti, the
problems and solutions. Middle and high school.
Don't
Junk and Drive - this award winning interactive CD-ROM takes
high school, Drivers' Ed students through a hands-on journey of the Town
of Pineville, where residents learn proper and responsible trash disposal
habits.
There
is an informative booklet that accompanies this program which includes
information of roadside litter, recycling, and how drivers need to make
wise decisions regarding the trash in their cars.
The Workshops and games are usually
30 to 45 minutes in length or can be tailored to the needs of the teacher.
