Information Packet: Conditions

ADOPT-A-SPOT PROGRAM INTENT

Encourage citizen participation in Litter cleanups of designated areas in their community at regular intervals. Individuals, organizations. or businesses may agree to keep a designated area, other than a highway, cleared of litter for a two-year period.

In exchange, volunteers are given materials to help them with the cleanups, and a sign bearing their name to be posted in the area. At the end of the two-year period, the volunteers will receive a special certificate of appreciation and may renew their agreement.

Adoptable locations could include parks, vacant lots, parking lots, walkways, median strips, streets, campuses, public grounds, bus stops, and other littered areas.

Parties interested in highway cleanups should refer to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) "Adopt-A-Highway" program.

ADOPT-A-SPOT PROGRAM CONDITIONS

1. Participants in this program must be accepted by Clean Fairfax Council, Inc.

11. A sign noting the program and the participant's name will be provided by the Council for installation in the cleanup area. Signs will be made according to specifications and artwork supplied by the Council. Signs are erected at the participant's expense and only with the permission of the owner of the property at the location of the Adopt-A-Spot site. Make sure you have the permission of the owner of the property to erect the sign prior to ordering it.

12. The program will be monitored by the Executive Director of Clean Fairfax Council.

13. After each cleanup, adopting groups must file an activity report detailing the number of people involved, number of bags of litter collected, recyclables, and hours involved. Printed forms will be provided by the Council. Completed forms must be forwarded to the Council immediately following the cleanup.

14. Adopting groups will be encouraged to schedule two of their four cleanups in April and October to coincide with the statewide litter and/or recycling programs.
