About the Council
Clean
Fairfax Council began as a litter control task force in 1978, established
by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors to implement an anti-litter
campaign. In 1985, the organization became a private nonprofit. Funding
for the program comes from statewide taxes provided by manufacturers,
wholesalers, and distributors of 15 product categories. As a recipient
of a non-competitive grant, Clean Fairfax Council educates the citizens
of Fairfax County, Virginia on litter prevention, litter control,
supports the county recycling program, discourages graffiti, and provides
environmental education to citizens: both students and adults. |
Thousands
of volunteers work together each year to make Fairfax County a cleaner
place to live. This is accomplished by spring and fall cleanup programs.
Public information is distributed through the Council office and much
of this information is translated into several foreign languages.
The
Council participates in many outreach opportunities which include
Fall for Fairfax, Celebrate Fairfax, and Earth Day/Arbor Day Celebration.
The Council produces the annual Earth Day/Arbor Day event held the
Saturday after Earth Day (April 28). The Council is a founding
member of the Virginia Council for Litter Prevention and Recycling. |
Clean
Fairfax Council has received awards from the Adopt-A-Highway program,
the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, Hands of Healing, Keep America
Beautiful, Keep VA Beautiful, Take Pride in America, Renew America,
Operation Spruce Up, and the VA Dept. of Waste Management. |
